KKR Coach Chandrakant Pandit was impressed by Shreyas Iyer’s knock in the Ranji Trophy Final, saying, “He delivered when it mattered.”

This time around, Shreyas Iyer is making headlines because of his crucial innings during the Ranji Trophy final vs. Vidarbha. He helped Mumbai achieve a massive 418 in the second inning, setting Vidarbha a target of 538 runs with 95 off 111 balls that included 10 boundaries and 3 sixes.

A BCCI central contract was lost by Iyer, who was deemed healthy by the National Cricket Academy medical panel, but was accused of neglecting domestic cricket. He came back to play in the Ranji semi-final match, but he scored just three runs against Tamil Nadu. He made up for it, however, with a heroic knock in the championship game that moved Mumbai one step closer to a record-tying 42nd championship victory.

In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Iyers will shortly captain the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). His performance in a crucial domestic match prior to the season delighted KKR coach and former cricket player Chadrakant Pandit.

Iyer’s performance was discussed by Pandit with CricBuzz, who likened it to the 29-year-old’s incredible 105 off 70 balls he scored against New Zealand in the 2023 ODI World Cup quarterfinal.

“Shreyas played a crucial inning, and he came through when it counted. His innings were similar to New Zealand’s in the World Cup semifinal here at the Wankhede, although in a different format, Pandit said.

“He is playing freely and isn’t altering his style of play, as seen by the ten boundaries and three sixes he hammered. He will benefit greatly from the innings, Pandit continued.

Iyer, who was in Grade B the previous year, has been suspended after this month’s controversy around injuries. Due to poor form, the right-hander was left out of India’s Test team for the remaining three Test matches against England. He then claimed to have injury concerns and withdrew from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy matches.

Iyer eventually had a breakthrough performance in the Ranji Trophy 2024 final, the greatest event of them, after a run of underwhelming innings-capabilities for both Mumbai and India. In addition to him, teenage player Musheer Khan and captain Ajinkya Rahane made crucial hits to put Mumbai ahead.

While Musheer hit 136 off 36 deliveries in the championship game, Rahane, who had struggled to score meaningful runs during the season, came back to form with a half-century.
