Sammy declined the PCB’s attempts, stating that he already had a contract with the West Indies board to coach the WI white-ball teams. On Saturday night, Watson declined the offer from the Pakistan board and left for home.

Senior PCB officials had thorough discussions with Watson in Karachi during the PSL matches, offering him the head coach role, according to a well-informed source aware of the situation.

According to the source, Watson had first shown interest in the offer and had maintained a number of other and financial requirements.

“However, the Australian was not pleased that information about the proposed package was disclosed in Pakistani media and on social media after the board essentially granted Watson’s financial demands.”

The Australian then graciously declined the offer, stating that he wanted to spend more time with his young family in Sydney and that he had previous obligations as a pundit in the top USA league and the Indian Premier League.

According to reports, the PCB had agreed to pay Watson an annual fee of USD $2 million.

In preparation for the home five-match T20 series against New Zealand starting on April 14 in Lahore and Rawalpindi, PCB is now anticipated to opt for an interim arrangement in which the national team would oversee the training camp in Kakul from March 25 to April 8.

“The only option available to the PCB at this time is a team of local coaches as an interim arrangement for the camp and NZ series, and Chairman Mohsin Naqvi will be required to make a call after the PSL final on March 18,” the source said.

Naqvi has made it plain that he is eager to name foreign coaches for the national side on a long-term basis. These appointments will cover the Champions Trophy in Pakistan early in the next year, as well as the World T20 Cup in the USA and the West Indies.

According to the source, Younis Khan, Muhammad Yousuf, Inzamam ul Haq, and Moin Khan—all past captains of Pakistan—were also being considered at this time.
