Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka is suspended by the ICC from the tests against Bangladesh

New Delhi: Due to a violation of the ICC code of conduct, Sri Lanka’s top all-rounder, Wanindu Hasaranga, has been suspended by the ICC for the next two-match Test series against Bangladesh. Following Hasaranga’s desire to rejoin Test cricket after retiring from the competition last year, a decision was made.

A major blow to Sri Lanka, who were counting on the seasoned Hasaranga to hamper the hosts’ hitters in the longer version of the game, is that he was banned for objecting to an umpire’s decision during Monday’s third ODI against Bangladesh here.

Hasaranga was found guilty of violating article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match,” during the third and final ODI of the series against Bangladesh.

The incident happened in the game’s 37th over when Hasaranga grabbed his hat off an umpire and made fun of the match’s umpiring.

Bangladesh won the match by four wickets and went on to win the series 2-1.

Hasaranga’s offence resulted in a three-demerit point deduction and a fifty percent fine. The ICC said on Tuesday that this increased his overall demerit points to eight in a 24-month period.

After picking up three demerit points in the third Twenty20 International match against Afghanistan in Dambulla earlier this month, the all-rounder was already on five demerit points. He was then banned for two Twenty20 international matches against Bangladesh.

He has now exceeded the eight demerit point barrier, which is transformed into four suspension points under Article 7.6 of the Code, with the addition of the most recent demerit points.

Due to the four suspension points, Hasaranga will be unable to play in either of the two ICC World Test Championship Tests against Bangladesh or four ODIs, T20Is, or Tests, depending on which happens first.

Kusal Mendis, the captain of Sri Lanka in the One-Day Internationals, was also fined 50% and given three demerit points for a Level 2 infraction when he “abused the umpires while shaking hands with them” at the conclusion of the third match.

Article 2.13 of the Code, which deals with “personal abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire, or match referee during an international match,” was violated in this case. They had not committed a Mendis crime in the previous 24 months.

Hasaranga and Mendis both acknowledged their transgressions and agreed to the penalties suggested by Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees Andy Pycroft.
